First Class of the New Semester: Neighbouring Diplomacy and Regional Cooperation.
On the evening of 23rd September, Silk Road School (SRS) had its first class of the new semester, Neighbouring Diplomacy and Regional Cooperation. Professor Song Wei carried out his lesson via a video-conferencing tool, VooV Meeting. Students overseas had to overcome the difference in time, while students in Suzhou returned to campus for online lesson. This is the first lesson in campus since the outbreak of the pandemic. Professor Jiang Xiaoli, Deputy Dean of SRS and International School and Madam Wang Hongli, Director of the General Affairs Office and Executive Director of the Department of Research and Graduate Studies of Suzhou Campus were present in class to observe the effectiveness of having hybrid online and offlinelesson.
The first lesson went well, and students expressed their eagerness in learning. Using a hybrid method to conduct lessons provides a unique, high-quality, and rich learning experience and resources for the students.
Dusita Lertkrai, student from Thailand, shared that she has high hopes for the class. “Our professor holds high expertise in this field and my classmates are insanely knowledgeable. Hope we can learn from each other and let’s see what Thailand has to say as part of this fast-growing region!”
Steven Zheng, student from Canada, shared that although there was not much participation during the lecture, most of the participation is held in online discussion meetings.“Students were assigned to read lecture slides and come up with questions and comments related to the focused concept.” He also mentioned that an issue with lecturing online to a class of students from across the globe was that not everyone's internet connection is good and that there might be conflict between speakers. “I feel online lectures is not ideal, but it could work once we adjust to this style of teaching. I would suggest rules to be established for signalling who is to speak.”
Tamar Janjgava, student from Georgia, shared that “the class was very interesting, especially afterwards the discussion. Our classmates raised very interesting topics. I also liked the lecturer a lot.”
